As COVID-19 spread across the world in March 2020, President Museveni gave what many health experts praised as one of Africa's most scientifically grounded and early responses to the pandemic. This address, given before Uganda had recorded its first death, announced sweeping lockdown measures.
Museveni's address stood out for its clear, scientific explanations of viral transmission, delivered in simple language ordinary Ugandans could understand. He banned public gatherings, closed schools and places of worship, and restricted movement β measures that proved effective in delaying Uganda's first wave.
The speech became internationally famous and was shared widely as an example of clear, science-based public health communication by an African leader. It directly contributed to Uganda's relatively low COVID death toll in the first year of the pandemic.
Discussion
(4)This speech gave me chills. The line about 'fundamental change' is still relevant today. We need leaders who think beyond elections.
I was there at Kololo that day. The energy was indescribable. A generation that had survived so much finally had hope.
Thank you for sharing this. These living memories are exactly why this archive matters.
It's important we teach these speeches in schools. Our children need to know this history.
